Book Club: The Suspect – Michael Robotham

Last year some friends and I tried to start a book club. It fell apart in stages as people realised they had different understandings of the concept – some wanted it to be primarily a social gathering, while the readers amongst us wanted to focus on the books (oddly enough).
Since I seem to be remarkably devoid of opinions lately – hence the huge gap between posts – I thought it might be a nice idea to post reviews of the books I’m currently reading. A kind of one-woman cyber book club if you will. Comments and suggestions are of course welcome. Continue reading

Balls

So, with the World Cup less than a week away, I suppose it’s time I post the promised rant about the upcoming spectacle. Now, I know lots of people may think that my objection to the World Cup has to do with the fact that I’d rather be pecked to death by chickens than watch soccer (football? who knows), but there’s more to it than that. Continue reading

Have Your Cake and Eat It

Frankly, I’ve never understood the saying “You just want to have your cake and eat it too.”  Well, obviously.  Why would you have cake and NOT eat it?  Unless you were some kind of masochist or maybe it was that weird buttery-creamy cake that comes from cheap supermarket bakeries.  Blegh.  Obviously I have a little bit of a sweet tooth (I can hear people coughing and spluttering at the understatement of the millenium) so the more cake the better I say.  And so it would seem that the High Tea at the Oyster Box Hotel was made with me in mind. Thanks guys! Continue reading

Entitlement

Last week I discovered just how hard it is to expect someone to take you seriously when you are wearing bright pink pyjama pants and a virtually see-through t-shirt. At the time I was so angry that I wasn’t even thinking about my less-than-suitable attire (it was 6am after all), but in hindsight it was not my finest moment. Amazingly enough, bad spelling had nothing to do with this little tantrum. Instead, it was the sense of entitlement that some people seem to have developed when it comes to owning pets. Between the Covers

About six months ago, I was having a conversation with one of my favourite people, who also happens to be the smartest person I know. As usual, the conversation turned to books. Besides giving me some great suggestions of what to read, which I am always on the look out for, he said something which really struck a chord with me – if you read, you can never be bored. It’s so true. I have made it through 33 hours’ worth of flights and layovers without feeling bored for a second (only really, really sleepy!) thanks to the stash of books in my bag. I am always curious to know what on earth people who don’t read do in those kinds of situations. Continue reading

Surf City

Well, we seem to be on a little patriotic roll here at the moment so I thought I’d continue with it for the time being. I was also recently reading a post on one of my favourite blogs, Glossary, about what foreigners can expect during the Fifa World Cup, and I thought we really should be highlighting the special things Durban has to offer. If I had my way, I’d never live anywhere else in the world, so I thought I’d share a few of my favourite things to do and see in and around Surf City. Continue reading

An African Dream

It seemed as if it had been ages since I’d been to a really good gig…a girl could start to have withdrawal symptoms. So when I heard last month that Wonderboom and Johnny Clegg would be playing in Pietermaritzburg on the 17th April, I almost didn’t believe it. Colour me excited. Unsurprisingly, with that combination of artists, it wasn’t just a good gig, it was phenomenal. Continue reading

Home Talk

It seems fitting that after my post on The Beloved Country, I happened to be going to watch a show dedicated to her songs the same night. Prosound kindly invited me to join them at the Barnyard Theatre last night to watch Diamonds and Dust, and it was the perfect reminder of one favourite thing about my country that I forgot to mention yesterday…the sounds of South Africa. Continue reading

The Beloved Country

Considering the rather tense state our country seems to find herself in at the moment (and I’m really not going to get into the political goings on that surround us), I thought I might explain why, rather than being one of the people clutching my passport to my bosom and heading for the hills, I am instead one of those people who tried living overseas and swiftly made my way home again. The simple answer obviously is that I love South Africa with an intensity which does not blind me to her short comings but allows me to feel positive about our future despite them. Continue reading

The Nature of Fanaticism

The Easter weekend usually means a wealth of fabulous music for me, but what with Coke deciding not to hold the Coke Fest (thanks to that pesky soccer blah blah), and me forgetting to budget for Splashy, that was off the cards. So instead, I decided to indulge in one of my other favourite kinds of fanaticism…rugby. Continue reading
